The Independence class was built as one of the first ships to be able to separate into to independent halves capable of working separately in battle and whatever type of situation it came across that would justify this need. Hence the Class designation name of Independence. Up until this point, Ships were designed to have separation in emergency conditions only for life boat procedures. But when individual Life boat modules were introduced into ships hulls for evacuation, the use of splitting a ship for emergencies was found to be not practical.
This ship would split down the middle under computer control (Manual in emergencies) and would almost look like a Miranda class Starship with Two warp nacelles for each saucer section. The "A" Hull keeps the main shuttle bay with it's configuration, but the "B" hull has a small shuttle area that is below it's saucer section because the "B" hulls Warp platform was to small for shuttle storage.
These two hulls would be controlled by their own bridge areas and the under normal conditions, the First officer would command the "B" hull during the separation. Both Hulls had basically the same sections with a few small exceptions. Meaning both had an Engine room, Medical Bay, and so on. But most Science and exploratory labs were basically in the "A" hull and the "B" hull was living quarters.
There were only three of these ships produced as new starship designs replaced the same idea with smaller hulled ships.
These ships are still in service today basically as border patrols on the Romulan boundaries.
